Understanding Spravato
What you need to know
What is Spravato and how does it work? ⌄
Spravato (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) — meaning depression that hasn’t improved after trying at least two antidepressants. Unlike traditional antidepressants that work on serotonin, Spravato works on NMDA receptors in the brain and can produce results significantly faster — sometimes within hours or days rather than weeks.
Spravato is administered right here in our Germantown or Owings Mills office under clinical supervision — you don’t take it home.
Am I a candidate for Spravato? ⌄
You may be a good candidate if:
- You are an adult (18+) diagnosed with major depressive disorder
- You have tried at least two antidepressants at adequate doses without enough relief
- You are not pregnant and do not have certain medical conditions that would make esketamine unsafe
What does a Spravato session look like at Sevox? ⌄
Each session takes about 2 hours total. Here’s what to expect:
- Arrive — check in and get settled in a private, comfortable room
- Administer — you self-administer the nasal spray under Tamela’s supervision
- Monitor — you relax in our office for at least 2 hours while we monitor your blood pressure and wellbeing
- Go home — you’ll need someone to drive you home; you cannot drive after a session
